Pistol shooting at the Binghamton Rifle Club is quite varied. Some members like to drop in at odd times, alone or in a group, and just practice with their pocket target or hunting handguns. A portion of the club backstop is fitted with highly hardened steel that safely withstands the impact of high velocity jacketed bullets. The remainder of the backstops support any lead pistol bullets or 22 rifle ammunition.
The majority of the club members enjoy the competition of team events and shoot weekly in the winter Interstate Pistol Association League. This features low pressure competition between teams averaging a dozen shooters each who fire the standard NRA gallery course with both 22 and centerfire handguns. In each match the five highest individual scores are tabulated to produce the team score.
Some of the more avid club members participate in "International Style" shooting. This is the type shooting used in the Olympics and Empire State Games. This shooting varies from the high precision slow fire of "Free Pistol" where a contestants allowed 2 hours to fire 60 shots, to the "Rapid Fire" events where a shooter must fire at five different targets in as little as four seconds. Some of the International events require the use of air pistols or air rifles (usually CO2 or compressed air guns) and the club has target positioning and lighting to permit firing at the prescribed 10 meter air gun distance.
